SUSTAINABLE LEADERSHIP

Gwynedd Coincil LeaderGwynedd Council Leader, Cllr Dyfed Edwards, has declared his support for Dafydd Elis-Thomas’ leadership campaign:

“With his extensive experience and ability to expand support for the Party, Dafydd would be an excellent leader as we face a new era. His tireless work in Gwynedd, Cardiff Bay and beyond shows his clear commitment to the Party, and to electors all over Wales, and his high public profile is an asset to Plaid Cymru. As we prepare to face the Local Government Elections in May, we need a strong and robust leadership – and without a doubt, Dafydd is the figure to move the Party forward.”

Delme Bowen, Lord Mayor of Cardiff:

“Now that the British Constitution is under challenge, Dafydd Elis Thomas is the ideal leader to take our national movement forward. He is an expert on constitutional matters, a well-known and established statesman, able to argue the Welsh causes in public and in the corridors of power. For effective progress in the immediate future Plaid Cymru must elect Dafydd Elis- Thomas as its leader.”

Councillor Eryl Williams, Deputy Leader of Denbighshire County Council:

“With his wide experience and his ability to affirm Plaid's aims, Dafydd would be an excellent leader for us as we face a new era. His knowledge and untiring commitment in the North, Cardiff Bay and further afield are a clear sign of his devotion to  Wales and her people.  His public presence is a great asset to the party. As we face local elections in May, we need  strong and positive leadership - and without doubt, Dafydd is the person to lead Plaid forward.”

Neil McEvoy / Leader of the Plaid Cymru Group in Cardiff, and Deputy Leader of Cardiff Council, Neil McEvoy :

" DET is committed to self-government and the right of nations to have national self- determination. I admire his work in strategic nation building as the former presiding officer. He has the knowledge and experience to take Plaid forward at a crucial time. I also welcome commitment to equal opportunities for all and his vision of broadening Plaid support in non-traditional areas and of making a specific effort to attract English speaking supporters. Plaid must replace Labour in and for Wales: DET is the man to do this."

Dr Sibani Roy, Plaid Town Councillor for Colwyn Bay:

"With the constitutional issues facing us in a possible post UK Wales, we need a statesman with wisdom like Dafydd Elis-Thomas. His experience and skills in establishing the Senedd will be invaluable to Plaid and Wales. Dafydd El is also the candidate most keen on diversity and broadening Plaid's base in non traditional areas."

Kenoue Morgan, Dwyfor Meirionnydd constituent and supporter:

"With the challenges we are facing, we need a leader with a clear vision to take Plaid Cymru to the next level.  Lord Dafydd Ellis Thomas is the man to do the job; his ability to connect to the wider public and engage with different groups in the communities is second to none.  I offer my full support to Dafydd in the campaign."

John Rowlands, Secretary of Plaid’s Cardiff Area Committee:

“As someone who lives in Cardiff but brought up in the North East, it’s obvious that Dafydd is a Leader for the whole of Wales. Undoubtedly having Dafydd as Leader could extend the appeal of the party and gain wide support for self-government for Wales.  I very much hope that he will be elected leader, for the sake of the party and for Wales.”

Evan Owen, Dwyfor Meirionnydd constituent, Plaid member and Planning Consultant:

"Dafydd is without a doubt the best person for the job of leading Plaid Cymru in a new era when support for the party is increasing. Dafydd is a true statesman with a long track record of achievement and a pragmatic approach to all matters affecting Wales. His involvement in the planning process and sustainable development is inspiring those of us who may have had doubts. If you value your party and want the best for Wales then you must not vote for anyone else."

Plaid Cymru Conwy Councillor, Abdul Khan :

“My support for Lord Dafydd Elis-Thomas is no secret – he has already demonstrated his ability to gain respect from cross parties members in Assembly, therefore I believe he can unite our party members in order to take Plaid forward.”

Farida Aslam, former Westminster and local government candidate for Cardiff South:

"I will be supporting Dafydd Elis-Thomas for the leadership election, as we need a leader who can connect to the wider public and members to revive and move plaid forward. Plaid is a broad church and my politics sits comfortably with Dafydd’s. I believe Dafydd commands the leadership we need right now."

Plaid Councillor Lisa Ford, executive member for Highways on Cardiff Council:

"With huge constitutional changes on the horizon, we need a leader of experience who is heavy weight. Dafydd El is that leader. He has huge name recognition and will make Plaid be taken seriously."

Wynne Evans, Welsh Tenor and the voice of ‘Go Compare’:

"Lord Dafydd Elis Thomas...What can you say about him......a great man. He is a man with that rare ability of being able to talk with everyone in a room no matter what their background. Good Luck with the campaign,  the website and to all your supporters."

Gwynfor Owen, Penrhyndeudraeth Town Councillor :

"It is an honour to support Dafydd's campaign to become Plaid's Leader. Dafydd is the best person to attract voters, supporters and new members."

Huw Prys, Aberconwy Constituency Secretary:

"Dafydd has contributed hugely towards Wales’ growth as a nation over the years, especially in his role as the Assembly’s Presiding Officer. I have no doubt whatsoever that he has an equally important contribution yet to make.

"He is a shrewd and independent thinker who is willing to speak his mind unequivocally at all times. This is a key asset in a political world dominated by identity-kit politicians with their tired old clichés and lack of any imagination or vision beyond their party line.

"He is also among the few politicians who can discuss Plaid Cymru’s constitutional aims in an intelligent and intelligible manner that reaches out to new supporters. This is going to be vital over the next few years if we are to achieve greater powers for the people of Wales.

"It is imperative that we as a party utilize his experience and talents to drive Wales forward."

 Simon Thirsk, Dwyfor Meirionnydd constituent:

"It is vital that Plaid Cymru elect a leader with the experience and gravitas to appeal across the country - North and South, Welsh and English speakers - and to negotiate a new Welsh coalition to take Wales forward both economically and politically.

Lord Dafydd El is the only candidate who can bring the necessary strategic experience and vision  to the party.

But it is not just Plaid that needs him, it is also Wales.

For too long Plaid Cymru has been seen as the party of Welsh speakers (the statistics for party supporters and Welsh speakers are alarmingly similar) yet this party - which has brought so much to Wales in our generation - has much to offer non-Welsh speakers and all of those who come to live in Wales.

We cannot return to insularism.

Mae hi'n pwysig mynd ymlaen at y dyfodol Cymru, sy'n cynnwys pawb."

Dwyfor Meirionnydd Constituency Party:

“We invite Plaid members all over Wales to use their alternative vote to the full in this leadership election, in support of our AM for Dwyfor Meirionnydd. He had the full support of our Constituency Party when he agreed last May for his name to go forward and now he has been  formally nominated, our campaign will officially begin. As constituency members we know of his dedication to Plaid and to everyone he has been elected to represent.

“He has already proved his ability to serve all Wales as the National Assembly’s Presiding Officer for three terms, where he showed a determination to establish a new institution firmly in the hearts and minds of the people of Wales. We are confident that as Plaid leader he will seek to represent people in all parts of Wales. He has already shown clear policy leadership by putting the issue of the environment and sustainable development at the heart of his campaign emphasizing green sustainable jobs as the only effective response to the current economic crisis.

“He has already named the coming general election to Welsh city, county and community councils as his priority for 2012 and we are confident that Plaid can be a real force to strengthen Welsh democracy with his leadership.”

Western Mail Editorial, 12.01.2012

“No one in the Party has done more than Dafydd Elis-Thomas to enhance the constitutional powers of Wales since the Assembly was established. In his 12 year stint as Presiding Officer, he was far more than the man in the high seat who chaired plenary sessions. Behind the scenes, and sometimes very openly he was pressing the case for greater powers and an enhanced status for our democratic national body.”

Dim ond un arweinydd posib

“A’m gobaith i ydi y bydd aelodaeth Plaid Cymru wrth fynd ati i ddewis arweinydd i olynu Ieuan Wyn Jones yn penderfynu dewis yr ymgeisydd a allai ddod a fflach o obaith a gwreiddioldeb i fywyd gwleidyddol y genedl. Dim ond un o’r pedwar sydd yn y ras ar hyn o bryd a all ddod â’r angerdd a’r deallusrwydd i’n prif sefydliad gwleidyddol. A’r Arglwydd Dafydd Elis-Thomas ydi hwnnw.

Yn ôl rhai mae o’n euog o fod yn anwadal ei genedlaetholdeb a hynny yn fwy na dim am ei fod o’n ymwrthod a’r gair hwnnw ‘annibynniaeth’. Dyna’r gair bellach sydd ar wefusau’r rheiny sy’n credu ei bod hi’n bosib ail adrodd stori’r Alban yng Nghymru. Ond twpdra o’r radd flaenaf ydi hynny wrth gwrs – ac mae Dafydd El yn ddiogn hirben ac yn ddigon onest i gyhoeddi hynny. Mae gan Blaid Cymru swyddogaeth bwysicach a hynny ydi cydweithio gyda, a sbarduno’r Llywodraeth Lafur i gynnal economi Cymru drwy gyfnod o galedi mawr. Mae gweithredu felly yn anhepgor y dyddiau hyn – ac mae gan y Cenedlaetholwyr ddyletswydd i wynebu’r her honno. A dyna pam y dylai pob un o’r aelodau sy’n ymboeni go iawn am ddyfodol y genedl gydan roi pleidlais i’r Arglwydd Dafydd Elis-Thomas yn ystod yr wythnosau nesaf. Ganddo fo y mae’r profiad, y genhadaeth, y gallu a’r deallusrwydd i gyrraedd y nod.”
